Potassium ferrithiocyanate, K3Fe(CNS)6

The Potassium ferrithiocyanate, K3Fe(CNS)6, is obtained by dissolving freshly precipitated ferric hydroxide in thiocyanic acid and adding the requisite quantity of potassium thiocyanate. The solution is concentrated over sulphuric acid, when the salt separates out in small hexagonal crystals. The aqueous solution possesses an intensely red colour.
